 | Geetha : "I still remember my first day in Marialaya. I was living
with my mother on the pavement near flower bazaar petrol bunk. My father abandoned us when I
was two years old. Two rowdies misbehaved with my mother and I was beaten up by one of them. Next
day my mother bought something from the medical shop. It was poison which I did not know. She
said it was for my good. Luckily that moment Marialaya teacher came. She takes regular non formal
class in our area. She intervened and put me in Marialaya. I am now in 5th standard. My mother is a
self help group member." |
 | An anxious parent : "My daughter studies well of late she was
falling in all the subjects. I heard through her friends she was in love with aboy. I scolded her, so
she ran away. Thank god, I received a telegram about this from Marialaya. I am once agin with
my daughter. The counsellar in Marialaya has helped me in dealing with the issue. I am doubly happy." |
 | Devagi : "I was mad after Vijay a famous actor. My friends and
I used to buy tickets in blocks and sell them. Now after attending media programme I realised that
hero worship will never gain employment. Entertainment should be entertainment. I was also shocked
to hear my friend ran away with another boy who resembled the hero. After that, I am attending
vocational training in Marialaya. And I am employed in an export company earning rs 1000." |
 | Bhavani, a potential drop-out has stepped into High School today
because four years back she was prepared and shifted to a convent school.
Followed regularly and backed up by daily coaching classes, can't believe
that she tops her class today. |
 | "But for Marialaya, I would have lost my precious life and would have
become an easy prey to the eager pimps who wait to swallow us alive or
make use of us to get their livelihood", says 18 year old Kavitha, a girl
from the town of Madurai who ran away to Madras hoping to enjoy freedom
outside her home. |
 | Fifteen year old Jaya continues to work as she did before but with a
difference. She has learnt to change her spending pattern reasonably and
completely given up wasting money on gambling and other bad habits. She is
totally a transformed girl from what she was five years back.

 | Sushila is a street leader today and her teacher is proud of her for
what she has become after the effective three years of influence of street
contacts and classes. A few girls like Sushila have crowned the efforts of
their teachers and filled their hearts with joy and enthusiasm to dedicate
their lives for the girls left without a guide. |
